Morgorath
Morgorath, the main antagonist in The Ruins of Gorlan, was once the baron of Gorlan Fief (fifteen years ago) . However, he was dissatisfied with his position, so he launched a rebellion against King Duncan. The main battle between Morgarath and King Duncan's army took place at Hackham Heath. At that battle, he used fearsome half-bear, half-human creatures called Wargals to assist him. When it seemed as if Morgarath and his army would win, King Duncan sent Halt the Ranger to lead the calvary to launch a surprise attack on Morgarath's army. Halt succeeded, thus, Morgarath was forced to retreat to the Mountains of Rain and Night. For the next fifteen years, Morgarath planned to rebel again.
The Wargals
Wargals are "stocky, misshappen beings with features that are halfway human, but with a long, brutish muzzle and fangs like a bear or a dog." They are mindless creatures who follow whoever claims to be their master, so Morgarath uses them in his army. However, they have a fear of horses, so whenever the calvary comes near them, they become frightened, confused, and disorderly.
The Kalkara
The Kalkara, an ancient race that lived in secrecy in the Mountains of Rain and Night, were discovered by Morgarath after his defeat at the Battle of Hackam Heath. In the book, there are only two left (the third had been killed by three well-trained knights). The Kalkara are bribed with silver, and once they have a target, they keep on pursuing their "prey" until they kill their target, or they themselves get killed. With a physical appearance that resembles a cross between a bear and an ape, they have both incredible speed and strength. The Kalkara have thick coated hair that acts as a thick armor, therefore, they are very tough to kill. Also, the Kalkara can use their eyes to paralyze their victims with fear. However, their one and only weakness is fire, as it is the only sure way to kill them.
The Ruins of Gorlan
The Ruins of Gorlan are the remains of the former Gorlan Castle, Morgarath's former fiefdom. The ending of the book takes place at the Ruins of Gorlan, where Halt, Will, Sir Rodney, and Baron Arald fight the Kalkara.
