When Will and Horace lived in Redmont Castle as wardmates, Horace always teased Will because of Will's small size and dreams of becoming a knight. So, the two boys strongly dislike each other because of their differences. Also, after Will and Horace become apprentices, at the Harvest Festival, Horace, already in a bad mood, arrives late. He sees that all his former wardmates are having a fun time, and he gets angry. Eventually, Will and Horace get into a fight, so their situation still remains the same even when they have a grown up a bit.
However, this changes after a boar hunt. When Will and Halt discover that a wild boar has been terrorizing the townspeople, a boar hunt is issued. So, battleschool members set up for a boar hunt by forming a circle around the boar's hiding place and facing their spears towards the center. After they manage to kill the boar, everyone starts celebrating. However, a few minutes after the circle broke up, another wild boar appeared. Horace, who was in the second boar's path, tried to set up his spear, but he slipped on the ice, and therefore, he was vulnerable. Then, Will, who was nearby, rushed in to distract the boar and help Horace, only to be in danger instead. Eventually, Halt kills the boar by shooting the animal in the heart with his longbow. Thus, Will and Horace developed a friendship/relationship that can only be formed through shared danger in life threatening situations.
