King Herbert, also known as the "Father of Modern Araluen, founded the Ranger Corps over one hundred and fifty years ago to defend the peace in the kingdom of Araluen. Altogether, there are fifty rangers in the Ranger Corps, and each ranger is assigned to one of the fifty fiefdoms (or fiefs). Rangers are the law keepers, and they patrol the fiefdom assigned to them to make sure that the laws are obeyed. During times of war, the Rangers act as special troops by guiding the armies, scouting before them, and going behind the enemy lines. Many people who don't know any Rangers think of Rangers as slinky and suspicious black magicians or sorcerers because the Rangers never really "interact" with "normal people".
Outfit
Rangers wear a mottled grey-green camouflaged cloak with a dull blue tunic underneath to hide themselves from "prying eyes". The cloak also has "a heavy, deep cowl which, when pulled over the head, leaves the ranger's face in a deep shadow. This conceals both expression and activity. All rangers wear a metal oak leaf on a chain (the Rangers's symbol). The apprentices wear a bronze oak leaf, while the full-fledged Rangers wear a silver oak leaf. Also, the retired Rangers wear a gold oak leaf.
Weaponry
The Rangers are best known for the long bows and arrows that they carry around. All of the rangers have incredibly high speed and accuracy. Also, every ranger has a throwing knife, and a heavy saxe knife (can block almost anything). Will, an apprentice, uses a recurve bow in The Ruins of Gorlan because the longbow is too big for him.
The Ranger Gathering
The Ranger Gathering is a formal, annual event which all Rangers attend to. There, they catch up with each other and learn about the latest news. In The Ruins of Gorlan, Will attends his first Gathering. Along the way, he meets Gilan and Crowley, the Ranger Corps Cammandant.
